Writing a Syllabus

A syllabus adds order and organization to your course. Students want to know what to expect, so it is important to have a detailed written guide for them to follow and refer to throughout the semester. The syllabus should include:
  • Instructor's name (peer facilitators' names, if applicable).
  • Instructor's office phone number, location, and hours.
  • Instructor's e-mail address.
  • Textbook requirements.
  • Course purposes and objectives.
  • Learning climate or teaching method.
  • Course requirements.
  • Daily outline.
  • Evaluation methods.

  • Click on a link above, the text will come up in your browser window.
  • Click on File/Save to save to a folder on your computer. Remember the location of the folder in which you saved the file so you can retrieve it.
  • Open your word processing program, then File/Open the text from the location where you saved it.
  • Click File/SaveAs in your word processing program and rename the file. Now you can edit, print, or store the file for future use.
