INSTRUCTIONS

Journey through time with Glencoe's Theatre History Timeline! Use this interactive tool to learn about the people and events that have shaped the world of theatre, film and television.

Take a moment to read the following instructions. You'll learn how to navigate the Timeline and explore its features.

OVERVIEW

The Theatre History Timeline spans approximately the last 10,000 years. Your journey will begin at the far left of the timeline in 8,000 B.C. Continue right to get back to the present.

The Timeline contains over 200 people, places, events and works in Theatre history. Each is represented by a colored tab. Light blue tabs will unlock additional multimedia content, which will be presented in the lower section of the Timeline window.

NAVIGATION

You can navigate the Theatre History Timeline two different ways

  • click and drag the yellow slider in the middle of the Timeline,
  • OR
  • position your cursor over the Timeline stage, it'll move left or right as you move your cursor left or right.

FILTERING

You can limit the events you see on the Timeline stage by using the Filter Tool at the top middle of the Timeline. Simply click the small arrow on the filter bar to expand or collapse the tool. If you want to eliminate categories from the Timeline, clicking on that category will deselect it. The tab for these “filtered” events will disappear, but a small stub will remain as a placeholder. Clicking the stub will reinstate the element. Click SHOW ALL to reinstate all events on the Timeline stage.

WORLD PERSPECTIVE

Many events in Theatre history have been influenced by politics, religion and popular culture. Compare the events in the Theatre section of the Timeline to those in the World Perspective section. Do you notice a relationship? What is it?
