Summer Rain and Fireworks

The speaker in each of these poems by Amy Lowell has a unique voice, or distinctive use of language. To characterize the voice of a speaker in a poem, examine word choice, tone, and sound devices, including the vowel and consonant sounds of the words. Look for examples of words and phrases that reflect the speaker’s emotions in each poem. Identify images and expressions that you like best in Lowell’s poems. Then write a poem that expresses your own ideas and feelings. Use Lowell’s voice as a model.
