Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

Address upon Receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature

When you paraphrase, you restate a written or spoken passage in your own words to convey the same basic meaning as the original. Paraphrasing a speech can help you check your comprehension and obtain a greater understanding of the speaker’s message. Write a paraphrase of each paragraph in William Faulkner’s speech. Your paraphrases should capture the essential meaning of each paragraph but be written in your own words. After you finish paraphrasing, write a sentence explaining the main idea of the speech.
