Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

from Black Boy

Think about Richard Wright’s description of what it was like for him to live in the orphanage. From the perspective of the young Wright, write a letter to Wright’s mother describing the conditions at the orphanage, his feelings, and his hopes for change. Use the excerpt from Black Boy as a guide for descriptions and characterizations. You should write your letter using the first-person point of view, since you are writing from Wright’s perspective. Then write a response in the form of a letter from Wright’s mother. Write the response from the mother’s perspective and also use the first-person point of view.
