To Don at Salaam and The Bean Eaters

The tone of a work is an expression of the author’s attitude toward the subject matter. The tone might, for example, be sympathetic, angry, humorous, or sad. Tone is reflected in an author’s choice of words, punctuation, sentence structure, and figurative language. In one paragraph for each, describe the tone of these two poems. Look for specific words, phrases, and lines that contribute to the tone. Cite examples from the poems to support your analysis.
