The Crucible, Act Three

Mary Warren plays a critical role in the last few pages of Act Three. After you have read this act, draft a diary entry that Mary might have written the night after her appearance in court. Consider the following questions before you begin writing:

  • Where does Mary sleep that night, now that she has denounced Proctor?
  • How does she describe what happened in court that day?
  • Is she still under Abigail’s influence, or has she “snapped out of it”?
  • Does she feel remorse for her actions, or does she truly believe that Proctor is in league with the Devil?

In the diary entry that you compose for Mary, use a point of view and writing style that fit Mary’s character, her situation, and the setting. Use this diary entry to explore ambiguities in the play.
