The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner

Read Randall Jarrell’s poem and his author’s note, focusing on the tone. Then use the information from the poem and the note to write in the following three formats:

  • Write a letter to the gunner’s family conveying news of his death.
  • Write an official report or newscast of the event.
  • Write an obituary for the gunner.

Think about the tone necessary for each type of writing before you begin. For example, a letter to the gunner’s family should be formal but also convey a sense of sympathy. An official report or newscast should be factual with few embellishments. An obituary usually describes a person’s life and achievements in positive terms.
