Reading-Writing Connection Activities

1.

The Asians Dying, Separation, and When You Go Away

When making critical judgments of poems, examine the structure, language, theme, images, and other elements of poetry. Make a list of literary elements, such as rhyme, rhythm, figures of speech, mood, and imagery, to use as a basis for evaluating and judging a poem. Choose three or four elements and use them to judge the three poems in this collection. Write a two- to three-paragraph critical analysis in which you discuss the three poems. Provide specific examples from each poem to support your critical judgments. Also write a sentence or two identifying which poem affected you the most and what elements contributed to its effectiveness.
