Chapter Summaries with Key Terms and Academic Vocabulary

Chapter Summary

Section 7.1 Understand Conflict

Conflict is a disagreement or struggle between two or more people. It is created by situations, personality differences, or power struggles. Resolving conflict successfully requires several things. The problem must be defined before it can be solved. Limits need to be set on language and behavior to prevent direct attacks on each other. Negotiation and compromise help to reach a win-win solution. A mediator can be used if people cannot agree on their own. Follow up is needed to be sure the resolution was good for both people. If possible, people should work to prevent or avoid conflict.

There are many interpersonal skills needed to resolve conflict. Listening to the other person helps in understanding. Empathy, feedback, and clarification are often needed. It is important to talk to others about your feelings. I-messages help keep the discussion on the issue. Emotions and physical reactions should be kept under control. Using teamwork can be useful in resolving conflict. The timing needs to be right when dealing with conflict. During any conflict, respect is vital. The use of respectful language and attitudes helps work toward a solution. People can set an example for others in dealing successfully with conflict.
