Chapter 21: Family Challenges

Summaries

Most families face difficult situations at times. Children should be told about problems honestly and in a way suited to their age. Some children respond to difficulties by showing signs of stress. When this occurs, children need extra support. Physical, learning, and emotional disabilities can affect children. Early diagnosis and treatment help children with disabilities reach their potential. Federal law requires that public schools meet the needs of children with disabilities. There are four major types of maltreatment. Treatment and counseling can help abusive parents learn to stop patterns of abuse.
