Elementary Statistics, Sixth Edition (Bluman)

Feature Summary

Feature: Many elements in the book were updated based on newer, real data. New “Speaking of Statistics”, “Critical Thinking Challenges”, “Statistics Today”, and worked examples were added to this edition.

Feature: 300 new exercises most based on actual data were added to the book. Students are motivated by seeing statistics applied to the real world, as they learn to work with "messy" numbers (rather than data contrived for easy computation). Additionally, many exercises were rewritten asking students to interpret the results they just found. These questions help students focus on what a result means rather than simply finding a result.

Feature: A new feature, “Applying the Concepts” was added to each section and appears prior to each exercise set. The purpose of the feature is to reinforce the concepts. They give the student an opportunity to think about the concepts and apply them to hypothetical examples and scenarios similar to those found in newspapers, magazines, on news programs, etc. Most contain open-ended questions that require critical thinking and interpretation. “Applying the Concepts” can be used for homework assignments or used as topics for in-class discussion or group work.

Feature: "Technology Step by Step" sections show how to solve basic problems using Minitab software, the TI-83 Plus and TI-84Plus graphing calculators, or Excel. Students can concentrate on ideas rather than software syntax; they learn to translate easily from problem-solving procedures to on-screen commands.

Feature: More examples and exercises based on actual data. Students are motivated by seeing statistics applied to the real world, as they learn to work with "messy" numbers (rather than data contrived for easy computation).

Feature: Statistics Today problems open every chapter. These real-life problems, accompanied by a photo or graphic and sometimes a news item, show students the relevance of the chapter's topic. The answer is provided at chapter end. Students apply concepts and procedures to real-world.

Feature: Procedure Tables embody the book's step by step approach. These boxes summarize methods for solving various types of common problems. Worked examples include EVERY step. Since they can refer to the Procedure Tables, students are never "at sea" while working exercises. Through practice, the procedures become second nature.

Feature: Critical Thinking Challenges at the end of each chapter extend chapter concepts into new areas, inviting students to think about and apply what they have learned. By considering broader implications of basic statistical concepts, students deepen their understanding.

Feature: Section 13-3, on the Scheffe Test and the Tukey Test, covers material not available in some other introductory statistics texts. These topics can be important in a two-semester course or a course emphasizing research methods. Feature: Available bundled with ALEKS for Statistics. ALEKS provides students and instructors with continuous assessment, constantly updating and providing feedback based on each student's individual learning path. Students only work on the topics they are ready to work on.
