Special Considerations in Design
Essay Quiz
Answer the following questions in the space provided.
1
Describe the interior of your home in terms of how well its design would meet the needs of "special needs" users. If a member of your household has a disability or impairment, how was the interior modified to better accommodate that user? What features, if any, does your home have that would be difficult to adapt to certain users? What universal design features, if any, does it have?
2
Think of one or more elderly persons you know. Describe how well or how poorly their needs are met by the interiors where they spend time. Suggest ways in which these interiors could be better designed to meet the needs of elderly users.
3
Identify an example of good design in your community that has endured the test of time, whether that is a few decades or a few centuries. Describe what makes it good design. Has it been preserved, restored, or adapted to a different use from its original one? Why is it valued or appreciated by today's users?
4
Choose a room in your home and identify the materials, ventilation, lighting, fenestration (windows) and other environmentally relevant features found there. Evaluate the environmental impact of the room's design. Suggest ways in which that interior can be made more environmentally friendly.
