Design Principles and Elements
Essay Quiz
Answer the following questions in the space provided.
1
Choose an interior you are very familiar with, then choose one of the nine elements of design (space, shape, form, mass, line, texture, pattern, light, and color). Analyze the use of that element in that interior according to the six principles of design (scale, proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis, and harmony). For example, if you chose the element of texture, describe the scale of the textures in that interior, their proportions, and the way the textures create balance, rhythm, emphasis, and harmony.
2
Repeat Essay Question 1 with a different interior and a different design element.
3
Describe an interior you admire. What makes it an example of good design? How does it utilize and express the principles and elements of design?
4
Describe your own bedroom, or a room in your home whose design you have contributed to. What are its architectural features, and how did you work with them? Which of the furnishings and accessories do you find the most useful? Which ones do you love and enjoy the most? If you could change anything about the interior, what would it be?
