  1. Questions for Further Thought: The end of each chapter includes several questions designed to help students explore the ramifications of the chapter topic in today's world and what it means to them.
  2. An Appendix with Exercises: To help students try their hands at applying some of the core concepts presented in the text, several workbook-style exercises have been added. Among the topics are
    • a problem in Mendelian genetics
    • a problem in population genetics
    • an exercise showing the differences between phenetic and cladistics taxonomies
    • a forensic analysis using photographs and descriptions of evidence
