This chapter discusses the theatre architecture, staging practices, and plays of the English and Italian Renaissance.

You should know the general qualities of the era known as the Renaissance.

You need to be familiar with the origins, kinds and qualities of Shakespearean era theatres.

You should know the configurations and qualities of theatre troupes, with particular emphasis on the Lord Admiral’s Men and the Chamberlain’s Men.

You should understand the origins of Shakespearean-era playwriting, what characterized the plays, and what they imply about staging.

You should appreciate the qualities of Shakespeare’s plays and have a clear sense of how an Elizabethan-era play would have been staged, using the example of Romeo and Juliet.

You need to be familiar with the kinds of texts, characters, action, and context of presentation of Commedia dell’Arte performances.
