1		The sociologist Erving Goffman, in The Presentation of Self in Every Day Life, examines all human behavior as performance. Using the concept of theatre as play, discuss how theatre is a part of your everyday life. Give at least three examples of play and "performance" in every day life that seems like theatre.
2		The ancient Greeks, the artists of the commedia dell' arte and a number of modern theatre troupes have used masks to portray their characters. In psychology and actor training, the term "mask" is used to describe the roles we play in life and onstage. Compare the ancient use of masks with the contemporary concept of the mask. What are the similarities? What are the differences? What masks do you wear or observe others wearing as they portray their "characters?"
3		Create a game that requires the participants to play another person, to exist in a different environment than their own, and to resolve some kind of conflict.
4		If the purpose of art is to provide integration, synthesis, and satisfaction, how can you justify the kind of art that makes the headlines by offending people and alienating them? Is this art? Write an essay where you either defend or condemn such art.
