Evaluating Social Studies Materials

Chapter Overview

In order to judge the value or logic of an idea or to understand how and why people make certain decisions, you need to be able to evaluate information.

In this chapter you will learn the following skills for evaluating social studies materials:

  • judging the extent to which information satisfies criteria
  • recognizing the role that values play in beliefs and decision making
  • judging the adequacy of facts
  • comparing and contrasting different viewpoints
  • recognizing logical fallacies and identifying faulty reasoning

Forty percent of the questions on the GED Social Studies Test will require you to use good evaluation skills.
