Time, Continuity, and Change

Chapter Overview

History is the great story of humanity that unfolds over time. It can be understood as the interaction of continuity and change. New events are affected by conditions that have continued from the past. In turn, unfolding events will affect the future. Events in geography, government, and economics help to broaden and illuminate this story.

In this chapter you will learn more about the themes of time, continuity, and change by studying the following concepts:

  • political maps
  • physical changes affecting our world
  • evolution of language and culture
  • the growth of urbanization
  • implications of growth
  • violent vs. nonviolent change
  • continuity and change in the United States
  • continuity and change in the United States Constitution
  • continuity and change in American culture
