Drama

Chapter Overview

Drama is a type of literature in the form of a play that is performed instead of read. In a theatrical performance, the story unfolds before our eyes as we directly witness the characters and their actions. In this chapter, drama and prose are compared; the parts of a script and the elements of drama are discussed; characters are distinguished as performers of drama; and suggestions for reading a complete scene from a play are given.

From this section you will learn how to interpret the content of drama and analyze its elements. More specifically, you will concentrate on
  • recognizing parts of a script
  • analyzing the story elements of a drama
  • reading and interpreting dialogue
