Chapter 48: The Digestive System

Calories in a Sandwich

How can you cut down on calories while still eating your favorite foods? One of the major food-related health problems in North America is the consumption of large amounts of fats in the diet. Lipids are an energy rich group of molecules and were probably fairly rare in the diets of ancient humans. Fats are most abundant in animal tissue and in certain seeds and fruits. In many cases the high fat content of a food is due less to the main component and is more the result of the method of preparation. For example, frying food greatly increases the fat content. Also, in many cases a condiment may contain much more fat than the main part of the meal. Butter and mayonnaise, for example, contain large amounts of fat. Removing them from a meal and substituting a low fat alternative will allow you to eat the same food with a much lower fat intake.
