15-19 The orientation of comet tails

As a comet approaches the Sun, the Sun's warmth evaporates gas from it. The solar wind - a weak gas outflow from the Sun - then "blows" the comet's gases into a tail. In addition, the Sun's light exerts a push called radiation pressure on dust particles from the comet and sweeps them outward as well.
