Ferrett, Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, (c) 2003. Course Description Student Success 101 is a freshman course designed to increase your success in school and at work. You are encouraged to see connections between all your classes and between college and job experiences. The course is designed to help you develop personal qualities such as responsibility, positive attitude, character, integrity, and civility as well as academic and job skills. Course Purpose The purpose of this course is to increase your confidence and understanding of the skills and competencies required for college and job success. This course will help you adjust to various transitions, from high school to college, returning to college, and from college to the world of work. The Career Development Portfolio will be a tool for demonstrating and documenting essential skills and competencies. Course Objectives * Learn how to learn. * Create a positive and motivated state of mind. * Develop character, integrity, and civility. * Develop emotional maturity and self-control. * Learn how to manage time and money. * Learn academic and basic study skills. * Learn how to write and speak effectively. * Respect and appreciate diversity in others. * Increase health and energy and reduce stress. * Develop the ability to work in cooperative teams. * Take responsibility for school and job success. * Create positive habits and commitment. * Develop a Career Development Portfolio. * Make connections between classes and college and job success. Learning Climate Cooperative and experiential learning are based on two key concepts: 1. You are responsible for your learning and for helping each other. The instructor does not fill passive students with knowledge or the one "right answer." 2. Learning is cooperative and experiential. You are expected to participate in class and in the exercises, reflect and analyze through journal entries, and apply the concepts to your own experiences. Requirements and Expectations for the Course 3. Attendance. You are expected to attend each class and to be on time. Much of the class progress depends on your involvement and participation. Come to class prepared! 4. Critical Thinking. You are expected to use critical thinking and creative problem solving to complete chapter exercises and to apply these concepts to your school, job, and life experiences. 5. Career Focus. Make connections between school and job success through the Career in Focus, Case Studies, and your own experiences. Bring examples to class. 6. Making connections. The templates will help you apply course concepts to other classes and to work experiences. 7. Interview projects. You will pair with another student to help one another prepare and review individual library assignments concerning your Career Development Portfolio. You will be expected to interview four professionals in the career area in which you are interested and to prepare a paper of approximately six pages. 8. Career Development Portfolio. You will pair with another student to help one another in preparing and reviewing your interview projects and Career Development Portfolios. 9. Team project. Each team will prepare a case study concerning a common job problem and present a 15-minute presentation. Respecting and working well with others is a key course concept. Evaluation Evaluations will be based on attendance, participation, interview projects, Career Development Portfolio, and team projects. Quizzes may be given throughout the course. Grading Grading Guidelines Grading Scale Attendance and participation = 35 points A = 115 to 150 points Interview project and paper = 35 points B = 95 to 114 points Career Development Portfolio = 35 points C = 75 to 94 points Team project = 35 points D = 50 to 74 points Quizzes and other assignments = 10 points F = less than 50 points Total possible points to be earned = 150 points
