This chapter examined the perception process and the use of stereotypes during encoding. We also noted that stereotyping is a four-step process. The purpose of this exercise is to explore the issue of stereotyping in more detail. Go to the Internet home page for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) at www.adl.org, and select the subheading “About ADL.” After reading this material, go back to the home page and look under the section titled “Issues.” Select the options for “Anti-Semitism” and “Combating Hate.” Under the Combating Hate topic, explore the item regarding “101 Ways to Combat Prejudice.” Finally, conduct a search within the “Hate Symbols Database.”

  1. Who founded the ADL? What is the purpose of the ADL and how has it evolved?

  2. What are the differences among stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, and scapegoating?

  3. How prevalent are anti-Semitic views? Who is most likely to hold anti-Semitic views?
