Asthma and Dust Mites

Narrator: Ten acres of nothing but dirt right now. Just north of the San Luis Rey River close to the drive-in theatre fourplex. But in just a few weeks, it could look something like this: a portable, removable shelter for the homeless.

Man: There are really no emergency shelter beds in Oceanside. We estimate there are about twelve hundred or so homeless people in Oceanside. There are fifty-eight shelter beds, but they are all dedicated to special populations, so there really is no place for emergencies for people to go with this [unintelligible].

Narrator: Oceanside City Council will kick in $20,000. They are trying to raise another $50,000 for a hundred-bed facility to go up just after the new year.

Woman: We're going to have a couple of "Hoedowns for the Homeless" at a couple of country western dance places in town. We're also going to have a "Dream Date" raffle auction where they'll have the opportunity to win the dream date of their life. We'll also have a celebrity luncheon where the mayor and city council people- the fire chief, the police chief will be waiting on the people hand and foot, and we're also going to have a benefit dance with the Mardelles.

Narrator: The plan is to rent the structure for ninety days providing beds for single men and women and for couples and to work something out for needy families at nearby motels, a very ambitious project. They're hoping not only to raise money but also to get more volunteers interested. If you'd like to help, the phone number is 757- 9131.
