amputation  Surgical removal of a limb of the body. 265
arthritis  A progressive disease causing joint inflammation and pain. 263
cancer  Diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells. 265
cardiovascular disease  Any disease affecting the heart or blood vessels. 263
cerebral palsy (CP)  A limited paralysis caused by disturbances of the brain present at the time of birth; any of several disorders of the central nervous system. 257
cerebrovascular accident  Stroke. 263
diabetes  A condition in which the body does not metabolize sugar properly; characterized by excessive urination and caused by an insulin deficiency. 264
lesion  An area of damaged tissue; a wound or infection. 149, 257
mental retardation  A developmental disability characterized by below-average intellectual functioning. 261
multiple sclerosis (MS)  A progressive disease of the central nervous system, characterized by lack of coordination and speech difficulties. 257
myocardial infarction  Heart attack. 263
ostomy  A surgically created opening from the intestine or colon through the abdominal wall. 266
paralysis  Loss of sensation and voluntary movement in an area of the body. 257
paraplegia  The paralysis of the lower torso and both legs. 257
psychogenic stimuli  Stimuli arising in the brain (thoughts, fantasies, etc.). 258
quadriplegia  Paralysis of the arms, legs, and torso. 257
reflexogenic stimuli  Stimuli arising from bodily reflexes (e.g., in response to touch or smell). 258
spinal cord  A bundle of nerve fibers running through the spinal column and connecting the brain with the rest of the body. 257
