Tsunamis and Earthquakes
Check here montly for information and interactive exercises on recent geologic events and topics of interest. Enlist the power of the world wide web to expand your geologic knowledge of real-world events and applications.
In July 1998, thousands or people were killed by a tsunami along the coast of New Guinea. A tsunami, popularly known as a "tidal wave," is a giant sea wave usually caused by an earthquake.
Tsunamis are described on pages 399-401 in Physical Geology (8th Ed.).
Read the news reports linked to the web site. What did the survivors of the tsunami report that the tsunami sounded like? How many waves came to shore causing damage?
After visiting linked sites giving information about tsunamis, or from reading the textbook, what are some of the differences between ordinary sea waves (caused by wind) and tsunamis? What is the difference, in deep water, between wavelength? Between wave height?
How is it possible for a tsunami caused by an earthquake in Alaska to destroy parts of Hawaii or Japan?

Jupiter's Moon Io
This is NASA's website for coverage of the flyby of Jupiter's moon Io. It will pass on information as it is received. You can download a cool movie animation of the flyby and watch a huge volcanic eruption.
Question: What is the composition of the volcanic eruptions on Io? How high to the volcanic plumes rise? How does this compare to volcanoes on earth?
