Workshops in Student Success

Let us help you

McGraw-Hill is pleased to be your partner in student success. Whether you are just considering starting a first-year program or would like to rejuvenate an established one, we offer a wide array of stimulating and practical professional development workshops. Our dynamic team of experts will address issues of course assessment, access, organization, and implementation. Our workshops are designed to help anyone who is involved with student success and retention in higher education.

Sample Workshop Topics and Descriptions:

"Why am I in this Course?" Strategies for Motivating your Students

According to UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, today's college freshmen are less interested in academics than their counterparts have been over the last 35 years. Rather than "dumbing-down" First-Year program curricula, this workshop will focus on "challenging up" by using proven teaching strategies that motivate and provide participants with suggested hands-on exercises for the first-year classroom. Participants will come away with fresh techniques to communicate the relevance of the course not only to their students, but also to their administrators.

Student Success and Learning Communities – A natural connection: The Appalachian Way

Developing meaningful partnerships with different programs on campus is the key to a successful First-Year program. This workshop will share partnering strategies that have worked at Appalachian State University over the past three years. Representatives from Freshman Seminar and Freshman Learning Communities at Appalachian State University will present an overview of the coordinating efforts of Freshman Seminar, Freshman Learning Communities, Academic Advising, the summer Reading program, and the Learning Assistance program.

Using Learning Styles in the Classroom

Information about learning styles fascinates our students because it validates their individuality. It also provides a preliminary foundation for promoting diversity and working together in groups. This workshop provides participants with information on a number of learning style inventories and how to use them in the classroom. In addition, several activities that encourage students to think about their learning style, and instructors to think about their teaching style, will also be provided.

Taking it to the Net: Creating On-Line Student Success Courses

Designing an online course can be a challenging and overwhelming prospect. The goal of this workshop is to make it a smooth and rewarding process by providing you with step-by-step guidance in building an innovative hybrid online/classroom course. Participants will be taken through the process of planning the course, selecting a course delivery platform, and will come away with a wealth of helpful tips for teaching either an online course or an internet-enhanced course.
