2.1 Concepts

Compare the subset symbols Í and Ì to the inequality symbols £ and <. How are they alike and how are they different in their meaning? What is a logical meaning of the set relationship for Ì? Inequality symbols are also written by turning them in the opposite direction, ³ and >. Similarly, consider the following two new symbols for sets, Ê and É. Explain and illustrate with examples a logical meaning for these new symbols.

If A, B, and C are sets such that A has 47 elements, B has 32 elements, and C is a proper subset of B, what can you say about the number of elements in the following sets: A È B? A Ç B? B È C? B Ç C? Show diagrams and explain your reasoning.

Do you think it is important for prospective school teachers to learn about set terminology and set operations? Give your opinions as to why or why not. Check some elementary or middle school mathematics textbooks for their treatment of this topic and/or recommendations by state and national curriculum standards, and summarize your findings.
