The most common printers for the consumer market are inkjet, laser, and multifunction. Inkjet printers are usually a bit cheaper than laser printers, although black-and-white laser printers have come down in price dramatically. Color lasers are also reasonably priced these days. The most expensive part of both inkjet and laser printers is usually the ink/toner cartridges.

Multifunction printers let you fax, scan, and copy as well print from your computer. They are usually as good buy if you need these other features too.

There are also specialty printers. The most common are color inkjet printers which have six ink tanks instead of the usual 4 (CMYK – cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) giving a better range of shades.

If you want to print really large images, you’ll have to invest in a special large format printer. These tend to be quite expensive since they don’t cater to as large a market. They can be of very good quality using a crayon or thermal process to generate images.
