How do we investigate cultural history? What motivates us to explore historical ruins? Read the account of an early 1900s American expedition to Europe and the Near East. The mission of the lead scientist was to find early Christian manuscripts and photograph historical sites (http://www.si.umich.edu/chico/kelsey/descrip.html). Read the history and evaluate the photographs that are archived there. What does this example of a scientist's work tell us about culture and the recording of history? What kinds of things does this work leave out?
