Answering these questions enables you to relate material from the text to your own personal experiences.
  1. Describe what you would identify as a typically “postmodern experience” (either real or fictional). How does it differ from a “modern” experience?
  2. Create a work of art (visual, musical, literary) responding to the crises facing our contemporary environment or one exploring the threat of terrorism.
  3. Write a short story in one of the literary styles discussed in this chapter: magic realism, social conscience, science fiction.
  4. Find and discuss examples in the arts on the subject of terrorism. Are any as effective as Szymborska’s poem, “The Terrorist, He Watches” (page 136)? What other types of responses do we find?
