In Chapter 13, Larsen and Buss introduce us to many definitions of happiness and life satisfaction--definitions that have flowed from ancient philosophy to modern psychology. After re-reading the sections on happiness in your textbook, select a specific definition of happiness to defend; make sure to support your reasoning with personal examples and research findings. Why does this definition appeal to you? If you are dissatisfied with all of the available definitions, create your own, and then discuss your reasoning. Given your chosen definition, what might you suggest that people do to increase their happiness?

From news reports on new medications to commercials for prescription drugs, the topic of depression has become more popular of late, perhaps with good reason: According to Larsen and Buss, citing an APA (1994) study, depression is a disorder that is estimated to strike twenty percent of people in the U.S. during some time in their lives. Write an essay in which you discuss the clinical dimensions of depression--what is the difference between depression and feeling depressed? What makes one more prone to depression? What future research do you think needs to be done in this area, and why?
