In Chapter 6, Larsen and Buss point out that there are often controversies surrounding the study of behavioral genetics; specifically, they describe the historical concerns (those of eugenics and ethnic cleansing), and they also indicate future problems that may arise with the Human Genome Project. Take up the debate in support of the Human Genome Project, and write an essay in which you describe the advantages of the Project. What is its purpose? Who benefits from the research? Also, try to answer foreseeable objections: How can the dangers be avoided?

Re-read the section on "Sexual Orientation" (in the box "A Closer Look"), and take note of the weaknesses in past studies on sexual orientation. Understanding these shortfalls, consider how you would research sexual orientation, given the different approaches to behavioral genetics discussed in Chapter 6. Which approach or combination of approaches do you think would prove most accurate in determining the heredity of homosexuality, for example? Why would you choose these approaches and not others? What kind of nature-nurture questions would your research hope to answer? Use specific examples from your textbook for support.
