In Chapter 8, Larsen and Buss state that adaptations are always functional--that is, we cannot understand them unless we figure out for what purpose they were designed, or for what problem they were meant to solve. Discuss the absolute nature of this statement--that adaptations are always functional: can you think of any adaptations that are not functional? If so, can you offer a reason for why these adaptations may have occurred? Why or why not? Support your answer with examples from your textbook.
