In Chapter 8, Larsen and Buss state that adaptations are always functional--that is, we cannot understand them unless we figure out for what purpose they were designed, or for what problem they were meant to solve. Discuss the absolute nature of this statement--that adaptations are always functional: can you think of any adaptations that are not functional? If so, can you offer a reason for why these adaptations may have occurred? Why or why not? Support your answer with examples from your textbook.

Re-read the section on "Helping and Altruism." Were you surprised by the findings regarding the human propensity to help others more genetically similar to themselves than others? Compare and contrast this evolutionary perspective to what you believe--and to what you have experienced in matters of altruism. Be as specific as possible, and use examples from your textbook to illustrate your points.
