Re-read the section on "Psychic Determinism," in which Larsen and Buss explain Freud's belief that nothing happens by accident; then, re-read the passages and notes in Chapter 9 about denial, paying close attention to what psychologists refer to as the "fundamental attribution error," which is defined as one's tendency to blame events outside one's control. Now, consider Psychic Determinism and the fundamental attribution error side-by-side: If everything does indeed happen for a reason, as Freud maintains, and if most events are in fact outside of our control, then are we not as humans fated to live our lives in perpetual denial? Can we ever be free of it? Why or why not? Give specific examples from your textbook to support your opinion.

Some psychologists who are critical of Freud's theories have argued that psychoanalysis is "more a matter of belief than scientific fact" because it cannot be tested scientifically. What do they mean by this, and do you agree? What, if any, are the scientific underpinnings of Freud's theories? Imagine that you were Freud's student who now feels the need to defend Freud's grand theory of personality--what might you argue on his behalf? What concessions to your opponents do you think would be necessary?
