Book Preface

If projects touch your life in any way, this book is for you. We have written it for a wide range of stakeholders, including project managers, project team members, support personnel, functional managers who provide resources for projects, project customers (and customer representatives), project sponsors, project subcontractors, and anyone who plays a role in the project delivery process. For each of these stakeholders, some parts of the book are likely to be more relevant than others, but the vocabulary we present and the big picture we paint should be useful to all who wish to see projects succeed.

We hope you have noticed how the title of our book differs from most others available in the market: "Managing Projects" versus "Project Management." The latter, which is the norm, implies a topic or category of knowledge. The former, ending in the gerund form "ing" is intended to imply action and process; making it happen.

The need for knowledge and understanding about managing projects is on the rise as product life cycles compress, demand for IT systems increases, and business takes on an increasingly global character. These forces have led authors, educators, and organizations such as the Project Management Institute (www.pmi.org) to respond with a growing body of literature and training programs. We believe this book adds to the knowledge base about managing projects in a way that fills an unmet need: It shows how teams can apply established tools, and several tools that are relatively new to the field. We have blended the discussion of teams and tools, rather than treating them as separate sections or chapters. We present team-based applications of technical tools, examples from industry, and citations from the literature. The result is a book that offers the academic rigor found in many textbooks with the practical attributes often found only in trade publications. The book's defining characteristics include:

  • A team orientation: We show how concepts and tools for managing projects can work in team settings. The book includes team-based tools not found, as a comprehensive set, in any other book on project management.
  • A process context: We demonstrate how the various tools fit together as part of a cohesive process for managing projects, demonstrating the iterative nature of project planning and execution.
  • An integration of management/behavioral concepts: We support our prescriptions about leader and team behavior with evidence from academic research.
  • A balanced tool set: The most effective project managers are those who know when they need to be analytical and when a more creative approach is warranted—we offer ideas for making these distinctions and present tools for use in each type of situation.
  • A focus on pedagogy: We have developed this book around teaching and learning. We present material in a way that will both enhance an instructor's ability to teach from the book, and support the solo learner.

Knowledge is of little value if you are not able to act on it. And, in the context of managing projects, acting on this knowledge means working in concert with others. You cannot implement these ideas alone, so you must become a teacher and coach for your colleagues. We believe this book equips you to do this.

Students can replay any part of any class with easy-to-use browser-based viewing on a PC or Mac.

Educators know that the more students can see, hear, and experience class resources, the better they learn. In fact, studies prove it. With Tegrity Campus, students quickly recall key moments by using Tegrity Campus's unique search feature. This search helps students efficiently find what they need, when they need it, across an entire semester of class recordings. Help turn all your students' study time into learning moments immediately supported by your lecture.
