Rule 9 Numbers in Business and Organization Names Arabic numbers ( 2, 17 ) are considered one unit and are filed in numeric order before alphabetic characters. Hyphenated numbers ( 7-11 ) are indexed according to the number before the hyphen ( 7 ); any after the hyphen ( 11 ) is ignored. An Arabic number followed by a hyphen and a word ( 7-Gable ) or a hyphen and a letter (4-N-1) is considered one unit ( 7Gable , 4N1). Thus, names such as 7-11 Store, 4-N-1 Bargain Store, 6-20 Shop, and 4-Seasons Restaurant are indexed as: 7 Store, 4N1 Bargain Store, 6 Shop, 4Seasons Restaurant. Letters such as st , nd , and th following an Arabic number are ignored. Thus 1 st is indexed as 1 ; 2 nd as 2 ; 4 th as 4 ; and so on. If a number is spelled out ( First Street Pizza) it is filed alphabetically as written. Hyphenated numbers that are spelled out ( Twenty-One Restaurant) are considered one unit ( TwentyOne Restaurant).
