The early writings of Langston Hughes belong to the canon of the "Harlem Renaissance," but like those of James Baldwin, his contemporary, the later writings anticipate the great social and political surges of the Black Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. The effects of racism and discrimination are obvious issues and motifs in much of his work.
