Feature Summary

NEW FEATURES

  • Broader coverage. In response to those OB instructors who are attracted to the skills-oriented approach to OB and need the foundation of OB theory, the authors restructured the text by adding content and brand-new chapters that can be found in a more traditional organizational behavior textbook, resulting in a text that more fully reflects the scope and evidence base of organizational behavior.
  • Knowing and Doing Objectives. Because the text is about both knowing and doing, the authors have reflected that in their chapter-opening and chapter-guiding learning objectives. The text’s approach of including both Knowing Objectives and Doing Objectives is very useful for those schools concerned with assurance of learning (AACSB) guidelines and alignment of curriculum to learning objectives.
  • Contemporary Cases and Discussion Questions. Today’s students want more cases and examples of OB ideas in practice. The authors heeded that call by adding two cases to every chapter—most of them drawn from progressive contemporary firms that best capture student interest. Cases focusing on Threadless, Klout, the NFL Players Association, and Zappos are among the new cases with which students can identify. Also included are accompanying discussion questions that challenge students to wrestle with ideas from the book using the most exciting contemporary firms as examples.
  • Embedded Manager's Tool Kits. Staying true to the authors’ focus on knowing and doing, the new edition integrates the Manager's Tool Kits (which used to appear at the end of the chapter) directly into the chapter text. Embedding this feature makes the Manager's Tool Kits more readily accessible in the chapters and facilitates more efficient transitions from knowledge to action.
  • More Manage What? Challenges and New Debriefs. The authors have added more of the popular Manage What? challenges that appear at the opening to every chapter. Moreover, in this edition they have also added answers, so students can compare their responses to expert commentary on how to address the challenges. Answers to at least one such challenge in each chapter is still provided only to instructors via the Instructor’s Manual so it can be used as an evaluation tool if an instructor so chooses.

RETAINED FEATURES

  • Manage What? Challenges. Evident to its problem-based approach, every chapter opens with the Manage What? Feature, consisting of several scenarios related to the skill focus of the chapter. This feature delves into recurring managerial challenges and the skills required to solve those challenges. These scenarios and questions prompt students to actively apply skills in class discussions or written assignments.
  • Management Live. In addition to the examples sprinkled liberally throughout the text, Management Live boxes highlight the most vivid and engaging illustrations, stories, and short cases to enliven the text and bring its concepts to life. These boxes embody the “stickiness” of the text to help students recall and visualize its concepts.
