TRY THIS—Research

Explore the Nutrient Data link on the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory home page at http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/site_main.htm?modecode=12-35-45-00. Then explore the USDA's bulletin Nutritive Value of Foods, Home and Garden Bulletin 72 (HG-72,) at http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/HG72/hg72.html. This site lists the nutritional values [calories, protein, fats, cholesterol etc.] for nearly 1300 foods.

Click on HG-72 and research the nutritional values for one meat and one vegetable item in your diet. Compare this data with one meat and one vegetable plant collected by the Washo [Table 5.2 in the text]. Compare the food values with a favorite "fast food franchise" [e.g. Burger King http://www.bk.com]. A Google search can supplement finding data on prepared foods.

How do the Washo traditional foods measure up?
