Chapter Overview
(See related pages)

The focus of this chapter is on cultural adaptations in the areas of technology, systems of food procurement, and systems of distribution for societies that produce their food. The evolutionary-ecological model (presented in Chapter 5) is again used to organize the materials. Features common to horticultural societies, pastoral societies, and intensive agricultural societies are presented. Emphasis is placed on the diversity of individual cultural adaptations and the common patterning of features associated with each procurement strategy.
