Managerial Accounting in the Context of Real Business: A Focus Company Approach

Managerial Accounting by Whitecotton/Libby/Phillips engages and motivates students to learn managerial accounting by putting accounting in the context of real business. Each chapter uses examples that revolve around a real company, so that it reads like an integrated business story rather than a series of disjointed definitions and examples. Students are introduced to topics using an appropriate mix of conversational writing, clear and concise presentations, and relevant, everyday examples.

Most accounting students have never been inside a factory and will not work in a traditional manufacturing environment, yet many managerial accounting topics require students to understand how products are made. Managerial Accounting uses products and services that students encounter every day, such as Tombstone Pizza, Toyota Motor Corporation, Cold Stone Creamery, Starbucks Coffee, Mattel toys, and Blockbuster.

Student-friendly pedagogical tools, like Coach’s Tips boxes and Self-Study Practice quizzes, help to reinforce the concepts discussed in the text. Other pedagogical tools, like Spotlight on Decision-Making and Spotlight on Ethics boxes, help to emphasize decision-making skills and connect students’ learning to the real world.
