Introduction
Students have read about using dictionaries. In this lesson, they will test what they learned.

Lesson Description
Students will complete a concentration activity by matching terms with their correct descriptions.

Instructional Objectives
  1. Students will be able to identify parts of a dictionary and thesaurus. They will be able to identify different dictionaries.
  2. Students will be able to correctly match terms with their descriptions.

Student Web Activity Answers
general dictionary- contains a broad range of words in common usage
college dictionary- lists abbreviations, biographical information, geographic names, foreign words and phrases, and tables of measures
unabridged dictionary- provides as many as 500,000 entries
DARE- Dictionary of American Regional English
etymologies- appear in brackets within entries
homographs- words that are spelled the same but given separate entries because they have different word histories
main entries- begin with the syllabicated spelling of the word
thesaurus- lists synonyms
Oxford English Dictionary- multivolume dictionary that contains more that 15,000 pages
American regional expressions- may also be contained within the main entry
