Unit 7: Research Paper Writing

Overview

When you write a research paper, you examine other people's ideas rather than your own opinions and experiences. Select a general topic for your paper that is significant enough to hold readers' interest. However, your topic should be limited enough so that you can focus on and explore it in a research paper.

Gather perspective on your topic from primary and secondary sources. Create a working bibliography of sources that provide useful information about your topic. Take notes as you use the sources. Using your source's words or paraphrasing the source without crediting it is plagiarism. To avoid plagiarism, use your own words to note important information.

Develop a working outline to organize your collected information. Your topic will usually determine your method of organizing your outline. Alternative organization forms include a chronological text outline and a graphic that groups subtopics and details. Use your outline to write your research paper. Start with an introduction and end with a conclusion. Revise your research paper to add details where they are needed, remove unnecessary information, and tighten your wording.

Edit your document to correct and polish your work. Include a title page and list of works cited in your final paper.
