Objective- To talk about services available in Spanish-speaking countries
- To talk about going to the hair salon
- To talk about having your clothes cleaned
- To talk about using the services of the post office
- To talk about bank transactions
- To talk about things that may or may not happen
- To talk about what you would like, wish, or hope others would do
Notes
- You may wish to provide students with
the following list of vocabulary words
before they begin the activity.
| la campaña de publicidad | advertising campaign | | el cuestionario | questionnaire | | la empresa anunciadora | advertising agency | | el jefe | boss | | el negocio | business | | la Red | The Internet | | supervisar | to supervise | | útil | useful |
- Remind students that they will need
to use the present subjunctive as they
complete the Antes de navegar section
of the worksheet.
- After students click on the kind of
store they wish to visit, they should
be encouraged to explore the links embedded
in each site in order to complete the
Primera parte of the ¡A navegar!
section. If time is a concern, you may
wish to have each student explore only
one or two of the four categories provided.
- Students who choose to advertise a bank
in the Después de navegar
section should be encouraged to read Conexiones
on page 360 of the textbook before completing
this activity.
- Explain to students that the Bugadería
Tintorería Mari link is from
Barcelona and that, if they click on the
beach ball, the information is also available
in Catalan.
Expansion
- After students have completed the Antes
de navegar section, have them share
their answers as someone records them
on the chalkboard or on an overhead transparency.
As a means of providing students with
more oral practice of the present subjunctive,
have students synthesize the information
by making generalized statements such
as, Las personas en nuestro barrio
quieren que la tintorería acepte
tarjetas de crédito. Las personas
en nuestra comunidad prefieren un banco
que no cierre hasta las ocho de la noche.
- Have students prepare their advertisements
from the Después de navegar
section on poster board. Display them
throughout the classroom. Students can
then "visit" various places
and role-play a dialogue that might take
place between a store clerk and a customer
who is interested in obtaining more information
about the services mentioned in the advertisement.
- Students who choose to advertise the
services of a post office might want to
visit the following sites in order to
get some ideas for their ads:
Arte Postal contains links to a variety of sites
about postal art. Students can access
an introduction to the movement, examples
of postal art from Latin America, visual
poetry (some of which is in Spanish),
and links to sixty-three different pages
about postal art from around the world. País Virtual contains a gallery of stamps that
students can view before attempting to
create their own.
- Have students who visit the Rizos
Las Colecciones site explore other
sections of the main page. After reading
the Consejos section as an example,
students can give their own advice about
skin care, hairstyles, and other beauty
tips using the present subjunctive. Have
students write the information in the
format of a newspaper beauty column.
- Students who explore the Rizos Las
Colecciones may wish to look at the
hairstyles until they find one that they
like. They can then role-play a conversation
between a stylist and a client in which
the client uses the present subjunctive
to describe how he or she wants his or
her hair cut (using the picture as the
stimulus). This activity can also be done
with two people trying to convince the
other to select a particular hairstyle.
Possible scenarios: parent/child, best
friends.
