Families Make a DifferenceChapter Summaries with Key Terms and Academic VocabularyChapter SummarySection 2.1 Families Meet Many Needs People have basic needs. These are emotional, physical, social, and mental. Needs are necessary for survival while wants make life better. Needs are first met in the family. Emotional needs are filled when family members support each other. Emotional support builds family bonds and develops personality. Physical needs are important to keep families safe and healthy. Social skills are needed for socialization. Mental growth starts in the family and can be a lifelong process. Section 2.2 Families Teach Values Values are beliefs and principles. They define what people see as right and good. Values can affect every part of life. Values are learned first from the family. There are many other influences on values, some positive and some negative. The values a person holds make up a value system. A value system supports the family and society by helping a person know right from wrong. Living your values means making what you say and do match what you believe is good and right.
