To detect situations in which emotive language may cover up the absence of argument (or obscure the flaws in an argument).

To recognize situations in which the lack of good definitions interferes with clear thinking.

To know a variety of ways of defining terms in order to clarify them.

To spot common defects which appear in definitions.

To identify and expose equivocations, merely verbal disputes, and persuasive definitions.
