This exercise allows you to manipulate sample size, alpha levels, and the standard deviation to see their influence on the statistical power of a one-sample z test. First read the tutorial and then download the exercise. Next click "Begin Wise Power Lab." The applet is fairly easy to use. Click on "help" if you need assistance. The hypothesized alternative distribution is moved by dragging it with your cursor (right click). Experiment changing samples size, click in the n thermometer - desired height and then sample size. You can increase or decrease the level of power by clicking on the power thermometer. It will increase or decrease a sample size by 1. Clear data and start again any time. What happens to power when sample size decreases? What happens to power when the standard deviation increases? |
