What's New

  • Two Casebooks: The casebooks offer a wealth of written and visual texts that can be used for research projects. The first casebook focuses on Sept. 11 and terrorism, and the second on marriage and family.
  • 50% New Readings and Visuals: Nearly half of the readings are new in this edition, and numerous visuals have been added throughout.
  • Two-Color Interior Design and New Boxes: In addition to the second color, the fourth edition includes many new design elements that make the book more visually appealing and easier to use, including Concept Close-Up and Best Practices boxes that highlight key information.
  • More Writing Assignments and More Student Writing: Chapters 1 (Understanding Argument) and 2 (Reading an Argument) were entirely rewritten and now include activities and writing assignments. These and the other chapters in Part One now provides multiple drafts of student writing, including new model essays.
